Ember http-proxy timeout

I have my app available locally at http://ift.tt/1NpBRZc

I have my api available remotely at http://ift.tt/1QgBiqS

I have tried running

ember g http-proxy /api/v1 http://ift.tt/1NpBQ7A

But it just times out. Now I know the api is available - and this works when I run the api locally and change the hosts file to point to it...

Is there any sort of restriction on embers http-proxy that means that it can't proxy to remote servers? I've spent some time looking through this http://ift.tt/SCiraL and not found anything yet that hints at a restriction.
